Contact SMS Consent

How trusted contacts consent to receive SMS notifications

How It Works

When an Are You SOS user adds you as a trusted contact, you'll receive an SMS asking for your consent before any alert messages are sent. Are You SOS supports three modes — Sober (sobriety), Okay (mental health), and Safe (personal safety) — and you may receive alerts for any of these depending on the user's selection.

  1. Someone adds your phone number as a trusted contact in the Are You SOS app
  2. You receive an SMS asking you to confirm or decline
  3. Reply YES to accept or NO to decline
  4. If you accept, you'll receive alerts only if they miss a check-in

Consent Request Message

When someone adds you as a trusted contact, you'll receive this message:

SMS You'll Receive
Are You SOS: [Name] wants to add you as a trusted contact. If they miss a check-in, you'll get an SMS alert. Reply YES to accept, NO to decline. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.

Your Response Options

Reply YES Accept and receive alerts if they miss a check-in
Reply NO Decline - you won't receive any messages
Reply STOP Opt out of all messages permanently
Reply HELP Get support information

Confirmation Message

After replying YES, you'll receive this confirmation:

Confirmation SMS
Are You SOS: You are now a trusted contact for [Name]. You may receive alerts if they miss a check-in. Reply STOP anytime to opt out, HELP for help.

Alert Messages

If the person you're supporting misses a check-in, you'll receive an alert. The message varies based on their selected mode:

Sober Mode (Sobriety Accountability)
Are You SOS: [Name] has not checked in to confirm their sobriety. Please reach out to them.
Okay Mode (Mental Health Check-ins)
Are You SOS: [Name] has not checked in recently. They may need your support. Please reach out.
Safe Mode (Personal Safety)
Are You SOS: [Name] has not checked in to confirm their safety. Please try to reach them immediately.

Message Frequency

Maximum 1 message per 24-48 hours per contact.
Alerts are only sent when a check-in is missed. Check-in intervals vary by mode: 24 hours for Safe mode, 48 hours for Sober and Okay modes. No marketing or promotional messages are ever sent.
